People often talk about how stressful or frustrating it can be to work with their insurance company. Some of the reason is that people start this process when they’re already in a stressful situation — after a home has been robbed, for instance, or experienced serious storm damage. 

Part of the reason, though, is that customers often feel like they spend years paying the insurance company, only for that company to try to get out of paying or offer sub-par service when needed. Customers are often frustrated because they feel like insurance is just a scam, and they’ve wasted their money buying coverage that isn’t there for them when they need it.

The top complaints from insurance consumers

To see exactly why these complaints arise, researchers conducted a study of complaints received and the reasons cited by the customers. These are three of the top results

  • Unsatisfactory claim amounts: 18% of complaints
  • Delays in the process: 17%
  • Denial of claims: 14%

Perhaps most interesting is the claim that there are extensive delays. People in these situations often feel like they do not have time to wait. They need the money now so that they can put their lives — and homes — back together. If the insurance company begins to drag its feet, that can have a serious impact on the customers’ lives, even if they eventually do get the payout.
